Tooth Extractions

Permanent teeth are meant to last a lifetime, but that doesn’t mean that situations won’t arise where tooth extraction is necessary. Sometimes teeth need to be removed because they are decaying or infected. If a tooth has sustained too much damage to be easily fixed, removal is often the best option.

Some extraction situations don’t involve decay or damage, such as a crowded mouth: if there’s not enough room in a patient’s mouth for all their teeth, extraction is a viable solution. This happens most commonly in the case of wisdom teeth. At Decatur Smiles, we offer both general tooth extractions and wisdom teeth removal.

What Should I Expect from a General Tooth Extraction?

Come to our office for any general tooth extractions with Dr. Teichmiller. Before the tooth is pulled, Dr. Teichmiller will give you an injection of local anesthetic to numb the area where the tooth will be removed. After administering the anesthetic, she will remove the tooth.

Tooth extractions are quick and simple procedures. If you have any questions or concerns, call our office in Decatur, AL.

What Should I Expect from Wisdom Teeth Extraction?

Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars that erupt over the gumline during early adulthood. Nowadays, those who develop wisdom teeth often don’t have enough room in their mouth for the extra teeth! Removing these teeth stops and prevents pain, infection, and overcrowding.

Wisdom teeth removal, like regular tooth extractions, has been going on for a long time. Our professionals are skilled at extracting these teeth safely and making patients feel comfortable and relaxed. If you’re still uneasy about the procedure, contact Dr. Teichmiller about our sedation options. Sedation treatments will ease your fears and make your appointment peaceful and relaxing.

After Care for Your Wisdom Teeth Extraction

After your wisdom teeth are removed, you may experience some bleeding and discomfort. This is normal after a procedure such as this. Comfort will return within the next day or so.

Gently rinse your mouth out daily with a warm salt water solution. We recommend sticking with foods that are soft and consumed without much chewing, such as soups, yogurt, mashed potatoes, etc. Steer clear of straws and hard candy that may damage the blood clots at the back of your mouth.
