The most common times people stop to brush their teeth are morning and night – either before or after breakfast, after dinner, or at bedtime. Some of our Decatur Smiles patients worry about hiccups in their teeth cleaning schedule, due to family life, shift work or just plain exhaustion.
Brushing and flossing daily is important, but don’t beat yourself up if you miss getting it down here and there. Just don’t make a habit of it! The most important time to brush is after eating sugar or carb-intensive foods. These foods kickstart bacteria growth on the teeth without vigilant attention.
Highly acidic foods weaken the enamel, so it is best to swish with water immediately after consuming acidic foods to cut down the acid. Then brush about 30 minutes later when the mouth is less acidic. The fluoride in toothpaste helps remineralize the enamel.
Professional teeth cleanings and checkups are important for catching decay, infection or other troubles early, so be sure to see us at Decatur Smiles in Decatur AL every six months. We provide general and cosmetic dentistry.
